Intro

In a sense, data centres are the brain and backbone of our modern technology infrastructure - and just like the human brain, data centres consume significant amounts of energy.

Data centres enable companies and organisations to store, process and distribute immense amounts of data - and they also must be fail-safe. This goes hand in hand with high energy consumption, resulting often to a correspondingly large carbon footprint. However, aquatherm's solutions can help reduce the environmental impact of data centres.

Undoubtedly, one of the key advantages of using polypropylene piping materials is their sustainability: the thermoplastic, durable and recyclable material has a smaller carbon footprint than steel piping - without sacrificing quality, reliability or durability. What's more, the corrosion-free material significantly reduces the risk of leaks and associated damage or data loss.

Impressive customer projects in the data centre sector

With a selection of our customer projects, we would like to show you how diverse the application possibilities of aquatherm solutions are in data centres.

Name:
Novva Data Centre

Completion:
2022

Location:
Salt Lake City, USA Challenge: Cooling processes in data centres can consume 11 to 18 million litres of water per day. 30 to 40 % of the water used in this process is lost. Therefore, a loss-free cooling system was to be implemented in the Novva data centre in Salt Lake City.

Solution:
The waste heat from the data centre's servers was converted for cooling with the help of a heat exchanger. The closed system filled with a liquid medium, therefore requires no additional water. The entire piping of this efficient and sustainable cooling process was carried out with aquatherm products.

Applications:
Cooling

Products:
AQUATHERM BLUE

Advantages:

  • Resistant to chemicals
  • High corrosion resistance
  • High pressure resistance
  • Thinner insulation in comparison to metallic pipes
  • High temperature resistance
  • Lighter than metallic materials

The case study

DuPont Fabros Technology data centres: DuPont Fabros Technology, a real estate investment trust specialising in data centre development, has used Aquatherm PP-RCT for the cooling systems in several of its data centres in the United States. The company cites the material's ease of installation, leak-free performance and energy efficiency as key benefits.

Microsoft has used aquatherm PP-RCT for the cooling and heating systems in several of its data centres around the world, including facilities in Virginia, Ireland and Singapore. The company values the material's durability, corrosion resistance and ability to withstand high temperatures and pressures.

Global financial firm Credit Suisse, used aquatherm PP-RCT pipes for the cooling and heating systems in its data centre in Switzerland. The company chose aquatherm for its durability, leak-free performance and lower carbon footprint compared to traditional piping materials.
